ECHS NASA Students are Going to SPACE???!!!
The East Central High School’s NASA HUNCH Engineering Team (HUNCH = High Schools United with NASA to Create Hardware) traveled to Chalmette Louisiana to the Michoud NASA Facility for the annual NASA HUNCH Awards Ceremony on April 30, 2018.
A tour of the 42 acre climate controlled building was a rare event due to the level of security under which such a facility operates. However, because of the involvement of our NASA HUNCH team for the past eight years in developing hardware for the International Space Station, we were afforded a special pass into the facility!
Students were in awe of the fabrication of the Hydrogen and Oxygen fuel tanks for the space shuttle. The welding tools used to achieve such a massive job were unlike anything else.
Once the tour was concluded, Students were awarded certificates from NASA HUNCH project for work on 3D CAD, designing and 3D printing parts to be utilized on the International Space Station! A Representative from Oklahoma State University along with NASA Engineer, Mr. Bob Zeek presented students with a machined part that they designed for the International Space Station and allowed each student to sign his/her name on the part which will be installed in the International Space Station next year!
Once the part is installed, NASA astronauts will take a picture in space with the part and will send it back to the high schools for display in honor of the students’ achievements!
East Central’s NASA HUNCH Engineering students: President, Justin Lester, Vice President, Taylor Graham, Secretary, Madison Strickler, Treasurer, Carly Jones, Bryn Jefcoat, Makenzie Ehrhardt, Dakota Vaughan, and Emma Roberts lead by Mrs. Tammy Sampson and assisted by Mrs. Rochelle Jefcoat.
These students will be commemorated in space with their signatures on a part designed by them and utilized on the International Space Station! Congratulations to these future Engineers and possible Astronauts!
